Day Three: God Saves His People
Sermon Point: God never wanted His people to forget that He rescued them from their bondage in Egypt, so He instructed them to celebrate the Passover every year. When Israel first slaughtered the lambs and put the blood on their doorframes, God passed over their households and spared them the death of their firstborn; it was this final plague from which they had been spared that finally compelled the Egyptian Pharaoh to let Israel go. But just like circumcision, Israel neglected to celebrate the Passover during their 40 years in the desert. At Gilgal, Israel resumed their celebration of Passover so that they would remember that God saves His people.
Like Israel, we are saved by grace through faith in what God has done for us in Christ. And like Israel, we, too, have a continual reminder of our salvation whenever we receive communion together. It’s a reminder of how Jesus’ blood shed on the cross is what saves us from the bondage of our sin.
Truth: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 says, “The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
Reflection: Spend some time thinking about how you approach the communion table. Is it something that you hold in great reverence, or has it become too familiar for you?
Response: Find someone in your everyday-ordinary life to share the good news of salvation with. Start by telling him or her about your sin. Then tell him or her about how you are not enslaved to your sin anymore because of what Christ did on the cross for you. It may seem a little daunting at first, but you can do it!
