One week...can impact eternity.
Why do we take a yearly trip to Mexico? We set out on this mission to serve the Lord by being a light in the lives of the needy families that we encounter there. We believe that our efforts to meet basic/felt needs, and by being the hands and feet of Jesus, thus showing them who He is, we can help to change the eternal destinies of those whom we serve. We also find that we return home changed and better prepared to continue serving our Four Mile family, our community, and our world.
Last year, our mission team worked with Operation Serve International (OSI) to aid los pepenadores, (garbage pickers), living in the garbage dumps, and other impoverished people throughout Mexico City. Our outreach is a mobile unit that serves a variety of medical, dental, optical, hair care and children's ministry needs. The second half of the week is spent providing these same services at a small local church; we provide a 'connection' for the pastors and the congregations with the people in their community who have previously been 'unchurched', and many times these churches double or triple in size after we have ministered there! This year, our team of eight adults and one student, will spend our week with two local churches. Our team has begun meeting weekly to prepare spiritually, emotionally and mentally for all that God has prepared for us to do there! We are excited about our departure on June 18th, and for what we are about to encounter!
We have been travelling to Mexico City since 2000, and during that time, Four Mile teams have ministered to over 7600 people. We have given over 900 pairs of new shoes and socks while participating in foot-washing ceremonies. We have donated over 350 bags of groceries providing two weeks of food to 200 families. Additionally, our mission has provided the ministry with chairs for the dental area, a generator, an autoclave for disinfecting instruments, hundreds of pairs of new eyeglasses, two new tents, two new coolers, and thousands of dollars in medications. Most importantly, over 551 people have made a commitment to Christ during our visits. We are making a difference in this world!
